Taiwan's Indigenous Tribal Music
Hailing from the Paiwan indigenous tribe in Taiwan, singer-songwriter Kivi possesses a dark and slender fashion style, yet her singing carries a contrasting and immense energy. Her delicate and melodious voice can vividly depict the collective memories of indigenous communities from different generations, whether it be gentle reminders or blessings from the elderly, or songs that resonate deep within your soul.
Prior to releasing her debut album, Kivi already had a large following on social media, with several of her singing videos on YouTube garnering over a million views. After winning first place in an indigenous language singing competition, she was inspired to learn and create songs in her native language.
In 2021, she was discovered by Taiwanese indigenous singer ABAO, who invited her to collaborate on the single "Oneself" (Paiwan language: macidilj), which received widespread acclaim. In 2022, Kivi released her debut album "Watershed," which blends diverse pop styles, original compositions, and traditional melodies, showcasing Kivi's highly versatile vocal potential. This album was nominated for three categories at the 2023 Golden Melody Awards: Best Indigenous Language Album, Best Indigenous Language Singer, and Album of the Year. The album title "Watershed" is inspired by the terrain of Kivi's hometown and symbolizes her transition from an amateur to a professional singer.
