31st Golden Melody Awards
Waa Wei Revealed as Award Host
While Mary & Evan Yo Light Up the Red Carpet

......... 2020/8/17 . . .
Creative artist and GMA nominee - Waa Wei - was revealed as the host for the 31st GMA award ceremony. 37-year-old Waa Wei started her career as Natural Q's lead singer and now has years of broadcasting, theater, movie, and TV experiences. Not only will this be the first time she hosts the GMA, Waa Wei is also nominated 6 awards such as Album of the Year, Best Mandarin Album, and Best Female Vocalist (Mandarin) for her album, Hidden, Not Forgotten. In today's Special MV Release, Waa Wei sang a cover of her hit song, Only You, changing parts of the lyric to reveal herself as the host for the award ceremony!

When asked about her initial response, Waa Wei answered excitedly, "I couldn't believe it in the beginning, I thought they were joking. I'm so grateful that the organizer is giving me this opportunity to host the ceremony and I love challenges." A regular guest at the GMA, Waa Wei is still waiting for a much-deserved recognition, "Best Female Vocalist (Mandarin) would definitely be the one I'm looking forward to the most." Having consistently participated at the GMA as a nominee, Waa Wei also served as a juror last year and will now be challenging herself in the host role. She admits that there's a lot of pressure but also hopes that her unique and casual style would translate well into this musical festivity. She also asked the production team whether she could sing her son Louis' favorite song, Baby Shark Dance, during the ceremony for him.

The special EP, Only You, that Waa Wei sang at the press conference was a piano cover by Evan Yo with lyrics by former GMA producer, Isaac Chen. The lyrics are carefully crafted so that the first character of each verse combine to spell out Waa Wei's role in the 31st GMA. Evan Yo reveals that Waa Wei kept reverting back to the original lyrics while filming the MV, but that she was able to flip on a switch and complete the full song when filming officially started, proving herself a true candidate for Best Female Vocalist.
After taking on the host role, both Evan Yo and Waa Wei called LULU, host of the 30th GMA, for help. Evan Yo also shouted out to Mary, the other red carpet host, "Just tell me to start singing if I stutter." A passion for music makes the challenge especially significant, but many hope that they can join in the festivity with a more casual attitude. Previous hosts, Jam Hsiao and LULU, also performed during the ceremony. Waa Wei expressed her hopes to perform on stage as well, "I am a singer afterall so I can sing anytime."

Mary and Evan Yo, host and musician respectively, will also be hosting offstage on the red carpet. Having served as the red carpet host last year to overwhelmingly positive reception, Mary will be working with first-time host Evan Yo for the red carpet leading up to the ceremony. When asked about her second year as the red carpet host, Mary shares that, "I'll pass on what Dennis taught me last year. I'm going to have to start seeing Evan a lot so we can build a relationship!" As for Evan Yo, he was nominated as Best New Artist for the 18th GMA, and therefore is highly creative and musical. In recent years, he's expanded into theater, acting, hosting, and other fields. Regarding any potential negative feedback for his first-time hosting experience on the red carpet, Evan Yo shared that, "I don't have a lot of experience hosting, but it's a meaningful thing and I hope this will bring me closer to the GMA." He admits that he listens to nominated albums and songs when he gets nervous and says that he feels like a private detective whenever he's searching online for information.

The 31st Golden Melody Awards Ceremony will take place October 3rd (Sat.) 7 P.M. at the Main Hall of the Taipei Music Center. The red carpet of the highly-anticipated annual pop music award will be broadcasted live on TTV starting from 5 P.M.
