The GMA, postponed for months, will now soon commence, a testimony to its resilience. Unfortunately, the same could not be said for the GMA Showcase and GMA Heat as the two events were cancelled due to the pandemic. To ensure that popular music can continue to spread positive energy, TTV will be launching GMA-Heat Special Collection of the Best New Artist Nominees to introduce outstanding new singers to the public. The show airs on August 16th and every Sunday at 17:30 on TTV.
Formed in 2017, Accusefive performed at the 2019 GMA Heat along with 9m88 and both bands are now vying for the Best New Artist award. This year, in addition to the Best New Artist, with the album Somewhere in Time, I Love You, Accusefive was also nominated for the Best Musical Group, Best Album Design and Best Music Video. Yun-Ann, the lead singer of Accusefive, shared that he had to travel to Yilan three times before Zhe-Qian would agree to join the band.
Mo Zai Yang, a rapper from Hualien, went viral on digital platforms due to one of his songs called Fish. Mo Zai Yang also received a nomination for his new album Fantasia. “I have faith in my work but being recognized by the jury is a different milestone,” said Mo Zai Yang.
ONS was nominated for his debut album #osnrap. His song, Without You, which had remained at the top of the KKBOX billboard for 3 weeks, was nominated for the Song of the Year. In his interview, ONS expressed his appreciations to E-SO for inspiring his music career. He also shared his hopes for love and that most of his songs are stories of his own. “I will be happy if others can resonate with my songs,” said ONS.
The duo JADE, established in 2019, is comprised of guitarist Dudu and drummer AJ. With their first album NEMO, JADE was nominated for this year's Best New Artist and Best Vocal Group. The songs in this album were all composed by Dudu.
“Many years ago, I learned that Michael Jackson didn’t know how to play an instrument. I kind of copied his methods to create my music and I recorded my ‘nonsense’ in my cellphone,” Dudu laughed.
Chih Siou, a musician with a distinctive voice, was nominated with his first album Elephant in The Room. In addition to his voice, his long hair also stands out in public. When asked if he will bring a lucky charm to the ceremony, Chih Siou said that he carries a Pokémon card with him on important occasions, such as album recording and MV shooting.
Soul singer 9m88 is favored to win the Best New Artist as well and she was also nominated for the Song of the Year with her song, Airplane Mode. Her album, Beyond Mediocrity, expresses her dreams of being a singer and with this album, she has proved that she has truly become one. Some believe that 9m88’s music is perfect for drinking since it creates a cozy and chill vibe, 9m88 responded in jest, sharing that beer is her favorite.
The last nominee is Midi Yang. He collaborated with well-known music producers Sandee Chan and Chien-Chi Chen for Bad Midi. He shared that, when recording with Chien-Chi Chen, he became stressed and cried many times. His idol is Waa Wei, who was nominated for the Best Female Vocalist (Mandarin) this year, and hopes to work with her some day in the future.
The GMA-Heat Special Collection of the Best New Artist Nominees will air at 17:30 every Sunday on TTV from August 16th. The 31st Golden Melody Awards Ceremony will take place on October 3rd (Sat.) 7:00 P.M. at the Main Hall of the Taipei Music Center. The red carpet of the highly-anticipated annual pop music award will be broadcasted live on TTV starting from 5:00 P.M.
