The 29th Golden Melody Awards and Ceremony successfully concluded on Saturday 23 June, 2018. The overall average rating for the live broadcast was 4.90, with an effective average rating of 5.62, both represented the top spot in the country. Rating for the demographic of 15-34 female viewers was 8.32, which translates into a total viewership of 4.022 million people. The highest average rating of all the ceremony’s segments was during the presentation of the best Taiwanese female vocalist category by Chang Hsiu-ching and Kang Kang, and the acceptance speech by Elly Chang, a total of 1.484 million people watched the segment; the second highest rating among all segments was at 6.47 during the presentation and acceptance speech of EggPlantEgg’s best Taiwanese album win, a total of 1.429 million people watched the segment; third place of the rating fell to Hsiso Huang-chi’s win and acceptance speech for the best Taiwanese male vocalist category with a rating of 6.33, which translates into 1.398 million viewers. Sandee Chen’s Introduction to Hyukoh’s performance received a rating of 6.07, or 1.341 million viewership; Eve Ai presenting the best mandarin female vocalist award to Lala Hsu and Hsu’s acceptance speech earned a rating of 6.05 and 1.338 million viewers; Khalil Fong’s preface to the best mandarin male vocalist category received a rating of 5.98, or 1.322 million viewership; while 1.318 million people, or a rating of 5.96, watched Eason Chen receiving his best mandarin male vocalist of the year award and the following acceptance speech; Jam Hsiao’s backstage interactions with the nominees also gained a rating of 5.91, that translates into a viewership of 1.306 million people.
Performance-wise, the “Eve Ai and Hsu Yu Ying Saluting Special Contribution Award Winner Su Rui” segment took first place with a rating of 6.06, and over 1.339 million people watching. The “Jam Hsiao Presenting Oil Painting to Special Contribution Award Winner Su Rui” segment came in second place, with 1.309 million viewers. Third place viewership in the performance category was Hyukoh’s performance, with a rating of 5.78 and a viewership of 1.277 million. Fourth place goes to the “Taiwan Already Got Hip=hop” segment performed by PoeTek, Kasiwa, Andrew Chou, Miss Ko and Liu Fu-Chu, with a rating of 5.52 and 1.221 million people watching.
The average overall rating of the walk of fame segment stands at 1.40, with an effective average rating of 1.62. Highest rating segments are the interview with Crowd Lu, and the interview with both Crowd Lu and Eason Chen, both scored ratings of 2.91 that translates into 643,000 viewers; Third place goes to Vivian Hsu’s interview of Eason Chen on the red carpet, which received a rating of 2.85 and 630,000 viewers.

The sign language section that came online this year also received 185,952 views; as of 12:00 pm on 25 June, 2018, over 1.81 billion views can be attributed to the tag #GMA# on Chinese Weibo, which broke the 100 million mark within 18 hours! Views for the 29th GMA broadcast on Tencent Video has also reached 11.499 million in less than 24 hours from the night of 24 June, 2018 to 1:00 pm the following day.
With such a great result, Producer for the 29th GMA ceremony Issac Chen said “I was concerned everyone might be watching the soccer games instead, thank you all!” This year’s hosting duties lay solely on Jam Hsiao’s shoulders, and upon learning the ratings for the ceremony. He said “Mission accomplished, thanks the team for their hard work, thanks everyone for their help! Here’s hoping everyone can keep their attention on the music industry, and letting more people hear our voice. Next year marks the 30th anniversary of the GMA, I will be winning an award on that stage!” Co-hosts of the walk of fame Dennis and LuLu also received many praises for their work. For that Dennis said “I’m very happy, this is the result of a team working hard together.” LuLu also stated “This is my third time hosting the walk of fame, there is a lot more sets of participants this year, me and Dennis did our homework, and quizzed each other on names of nominees and the awards, thanks to the GMA production team’s adaptability, making this a fun but back-breaking job, here’s hoping everyone can provide more positive reinforcements, we will do better next time.”
