GMA 28 Specials on Taiwan Television Company today interview nominees for Best Male and Female Vocalist - Mandarin, Crowd Lu, Naiwen Yang and Jia Jia. Lu is very grateful to the nomination. He mentions that he didn’t think he had a good voice for a long time, after being eliminated in a contest in the first around when he was ten years old with his performance Kiss Goodbye. “With this nomination, I start to believe maybe I have a good voice,” says Lu. “I’ve watched the ceremony many times at home as viewer. It will be a new experience to see myself in one of those nominee boxes on screen.” Even though this is her third nomination, Jia Jia still feels quite nervous. “It’s very competitive in my category,” says Jia Jia, “but I really hope to win. I hope our efforts in this album after three years of preparation will be recognized.” Yang has won this category in the 11th Golden Melody Awards, and she stays as cool as always. “I am glad to be nominated,” Yang says, “but I hope I can treat everything with the same composure, without being influenced by the results.”
The host Dennis is every impressed by Lu’s sophisticated guitar skills, and surprised how one guitar can perform so many layers in a score. “It’s actually a survival skill,” Lu smiles. “When I was a student, I thought it’s too plain only with basic chord, so I add something more to highlight my vocal.” Lu is obsessed with guitars that he didn’t realize he owned 32 of them until a recent move. He also insisted to use all original instruments with very simple programming. Lu says it’s inspired by Pink Moon by Nick Drake. “You don’t really need a huge group of instruments to reach people deep inside.” In this album Still Missing that receives the third GMA nomination, Jia Jia invited Masa from the band Mayday as music director, “because I’m more comfortable working with someone I know”. Her wonderful voice is widely appreciated by fans as well as other musicians. In two pre-production meetings, renowned producer and songwriter Jonathan Lee (李宗盛) reminded the team that this album should stay simple as Jia Jia was. Because of her introvert personality, she almost missed the chance to perform on Mayday’s concerts. “I was a bit resistant before knowing what they were doing, but enjoy music with them after knowing the band personally.” Over the years, Yang has maintained her distinctive styles. “I always choose what I like into my albums, with some inputs from my label,” says Yang. “Each album speaks about how I feel in those years.”In the latest album Centrifugal Force, Yang put a slower song in the first place. “I really like this song. Unlike other slower music, it offers multiple perspectives to listeners for various scenarios. The lyricist does a wonderful job.” GMA 28 Specials will invite experienced judge Yongxing Yuan and three other music critics to analyze 15 key categories and predict potential winners. Starting from June 10th, the show will broadcast on TTV from 3pm to 5pm each Saturday and Sunday for three weeks.
