The 2017 Golden Melody Ceremony Awards & International Music Festival (GMA&F) will be held in the Taipei Arena this Saturday. This year’s Special Contribution Award will go to the late Taiwanese pop singer Chang Yu-sheng. The award will be presented by the famed singer and show host Matilda Tao. The two were college friends, and shared a deep connection. Thanks to Chang’s introduction, Tao was able to launch her career as a singer, with later transition into a successful show host. “Chang’s outstanding musical performance was the ideal for many musicians of his time. His songs were bold with a tinge of innocence often found in student works. He enjoyed a special place in mandopop, and people who are familiar with his works still reminese to this very day.” The presentation and speech will be followed by a performance of his works by Chang’s then-apprentice A-mei, to commemorate the passing of such a musical talent. The mandopop diva A-mei, once the foremost apprentice of Chang Yu-sheng, will be involved in the selection process for the performance portfolio. At her behest, the segment will be produced by the Singaporean master composer Martin, along with producer Howe Chen, nominated for three categories in this year’s GMA. The production will follow the same standards as a brand new album. Through the comforting and penetrating voice of A-mei, several of Chang’s classics will again be peformed on the stage of GMA in comemoration of A-mei’s beloved old master. This year will mark the 20th anniversary of Chang Yu-sheng’s passing, however his works still remain timeless classics, and still reverberate through the popular consciousness. The presenter Tilda Tao also expressed the intention to take advantage of this opportunity to promote Chang’s legacy, “For many of our young friends born in the 90s or even the 2000s, Chang Yu-sheng may not be that familairt to them” Tao said, “This time I would like to introduce Chang as if he’s a brand new artist, allowing more people to know about his works and his music.” The 28th Golden Melody Awards will be grandly held on 24th June, 2017 at the Taipei Arena. The Walk of Fame at 5 pm and the Award Ceremony at 7pm will be broadcast live through the Taiwan Television (TTV) channel, with simultaneous broadcast available on services such as TOUCH TTV, Youtube-TTV, Chunghwa Telecom MOD, chtvideo app, HamiConcert, UFO Radio, Tencent Video, Starhub, Astro and Echostar. Syndication will also be available on TTV, TTV HD, Unique Satellite TV (USTV), USTV Business. Audiences around the world will be able to enjoy this Taiwanese pop music feast either through live broadcast or syndication.
